Matematiikan juurille
Matematiikka on hieman omalaatuinen tiedonala sen yksinkertaisen rakenteen vuoksi. Kaikki matemaattinen tieto pohjautuu lopulta yhteisesti hyväksyttyihin aksioomiin, joista edetään kohti mielenkiintoisempia tuloksia todistusten kautta. Matematiikan lähtökohdaksi valitaan usein joukko-oppi, ja sen ymmärtäminen onkin oleellinen osa esimerkiksi matemaattisen analyysin hallintaa.
Matemaattisen tekstin rakenteisiin kuuluvat seuraavat usein esiintyvät osat: määritelmä, lause, todistus, seuraus ja lemma. Määritelmässä esitellään usein jonkin asian nimi, johon matemaattisessa tekstissä viitataan jatkossa. Määritelmää voisi luonnehtia jonkinlaiseksi sopimukseksi, jota ei ole tarvetta perustella. Lauseet ovat tietoja, jotka voidaan päätellä määritelmien tai toisten lauseiden perusteella. Lauseen todistus on perustelu sille, miksi lauseessa annettu tieto on voimassa. Seuraus ja lemma ovat lauseita, joilla on tietynlainen rooli. Seuraus on lause, jonka todistus perustuu yleensä hyvin pitkälti yhteen edeltävään lauseeseen. Lemma on apulause, jolla on tavanomaisesti käyttöä useamman muun lauseen todistamisessa, mutta jota ei muuten nähdä merkittävänä käsiteltävässä aihekokonaisuudessa. (Huom. Jotkut yksittäiset lemmat ovat osoittautuneet alkuperäistä nimeämistään merkittävämmäksi, esim. Eukleideen lemma.)
Tässä luvussa kerrataan ja esitellään matematiikan perusteisiin liittyviä käsitteitä, merkintöjä sekä tutustutaan matemaattisen todistamisen alkeisiin. Osa tutuista merkinnöistä, kuten summa \(+\) tai vertailumerkit \(\leq\) ja \(<\), otetaan käyttöön ilman esittelyä. Tavoitteena on kerrata jatkossa tarvittavia käsitteitä, oppia käyttämään matemaattisia merkintöjä oikein sekä pystyä lukemaan ja kirjoittamaan yksinkertaisia todistuksia.
