Jacobin matriisi ja suurennussuhteet

Yleisessä tapauksessa funktion \(\mathbf{f}\colon \mathbf{R}^k\to\mathbf{R}^n\) derivaatta on \(n\times k\)-matriisi \(D\mathbf{f}\), jonka alkiot ovat muotoa \([D\mathbf{f}]_{ij}=\partial f_i/\partial x_j\), ts. derivaattamatriisin \(i\):nnellä rivillä on koordinaattifunktion \(f_i\) kaikki ensimmäisen kertaluvun osittaisderivaatat. Sitä kutsutaan myös (Jacobian matrix) Jacobin matriisiksi ja merkitään vaihtoehtoisesti

\[D\mathbf{f} = J_{\mathbf{f}} =\nabla \mathbf{f}= \frac{\partial (f_1,\dots,f_n)}{\partial (x_1,\dots,x_k)}.\]

Tapauksessa \(n=k\) sen determinantti on nimeltään (Jacobian dererminant) Jacobin determinantti. (Jacobian) Joissakin yhteyksissä merkintä \(J=J_{\mathbf{f}}\) tarkoittaa nimenomaan Jacobin determinanttia eikä matriisia. (Lisäksi Jacobin matriisi määritellään joskus yllä olevan transpoosina, mutta se ei vaikuta determinanttiin). Kaavojen lyhentämiseksi käytetään alla derivaattamatriisille merkintää \(J\).

Tarkastellaan tapausta \(n=3\), kun \(k=1\), 2 tai 3. Tarkoituksena on osoittaa, että kaikissa tapauksissa pituuden, pinta-alan tai tilavuuden suurennussuhde voidaan kirjoittaa yhtenäisessä muodossa

\[\sqrt{\det J^T J}.\]

Tapaus \(k=1\): Kyseessä on avaruuskäyrän parametrisointi, jolloin luvun 1 merkintöjä käyttäen \(\mathbf{f}(t)=\mathbf{r}(t)=(x(t),y(t),z(t))\) ja

\[\begin{split}J = \begin{bmatrix}[1.5] \frac{dx}{dt} \\ \frac{dy}{dt} \\ \frac{dz}{dt} \\ \end{bmatrix}.\end{split}\]

Tällöin \(J^T J = x'(t)^2+y'(t)^2+z'(t)^2 = \|\mathbf{r}'(t)\| ^2\ge 0\), sillä vaaka- ja pystyvektorin kertominen vastaa vektoreiden pistetuloa. Näin ollen kaavan \(ds = \|\mathbf{r}'(t)\| \, dt\) kaarenpituuden suurennussuhde voidaan kirjoittaa myös muodossa

\[\|\mathbf{r}'(t)\| = \sqrt{\det J^T J}.\]

Determinantti on tässä kaavassa tarpeeton, jos \(1\times 1\)-matriisi tulkitaan reaaliluvuksi.

Tapaus \(k=2\): Kyseessä on pinnan parametrisointi, joten luvun 4 merkintöjä käyttäen \(\mathbf{f}(u,v)=\mathbf{r}(u,v)=(x(u,v),y(u,v),z(u,v))\) ja

\[\begin{split}J = \begin{bmatrix}[1.5] \frac{\partial x}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial x}{\partial v}\\ \frac{\partial y}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial y}{\partial v}\\ \frac{\partial z}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial z}{\partial v}\\ \end{bmatrix}.\end{split}\]

Kaikille \(3\times 2\)-matriiseille \(M\) pätee: Lauseke \(\det (M^T M)\) on sama kuin matriisin \(M\) sarakevektoreiden ristitulovektorin pituuden neliö. Tämän väitteen todistus jätetään harjoitustehtäväksi. Luvun 4 merkinnöillä saadaan siis

\[\det J^T J = \left\| \frac{\partial \mathbf{r}}{\partial u} \times \frac{\partial \mathbf{r}}{\partial v}\right\|^2 = \| \mathbf{r}_u\times \mathbf{r}_v\|^2 \ge 0\]

Kaavan \(dS = \| \mathbf{r}_u\times \mathbf{r}_v\| \, dA\) pinta-alan suurennussuhde voidaan siis kirjoittaa muodossa

\[\| \mathbf{r}_u\times \mathbf{r}_v\| =\sqrt{\det J^T J}.\]

Tapaus \(k=3\): Kolmen muuttujan tapaus voidaan tulkita joko muuttujanvaihtona tai vektorikenttänä, mutta tilavuuden muutoksia tutkittaessa injektiivinen muuttujanvaihto on luonnollisempi vaihtoehto. Luvun 3 merkinnöillä

\[\mathbf{f}(u,v,w)=\mathbf{r}(u,v,w)=(x(u,v,w),y(u,v,w),z(u,v,w))\]

, jolloin

\[\begin{split}J = \begin{bmatrix}[1.5] \frac{\partial x}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial x}{\partial v} & \frac{\partial x}{\partial w}\\ \frac{\partial y}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial y}{\partial v} & \frac{\partial y}{\partial w}\\ \frac{\partial z}{\partial u} & \frac{\partial z}{\partial v} & \frac{\partial z}{\partial w}\\ \end{bmatrix}.\end{split}\]

Neliömatriisin tapauksessa

\[\det(J^T J) = \det(J^T)\det(J) = \big(\det(J)\big)^2 \ge 0,\]

joten tilavuuden suurennussuhde voidaan esittää tässäkin tapauksessa muodossa

\[|\det J|=\sqrt{\det J^T J}.\]
