Joukko-opin käsitteitä
Seuraavat käsitteet voidaan määritellä yleisemminkin, mutta alla
olevat määritelmät on muotoiltu \(n\)-ulotteisen avaruuden
\(\mathbf{R}^n\) osajoukoille, joiden alkioita
kutsutaan yleensä pisteiksi.
Tyhjä joukko: (empty set) Tyhjässä joukossa ei ole
yhtään alkiota. Sitä merkitään symbolilla \(\emptyset\).
Ominaisuutta ”\(a\) on joukon \(A\) alkio”(element of a set) merkitään \(a\in A\).
Sanotaan myös: \(a\) kuuluu joukkoon \(A\). Vastakohtaa ”\(a\) ei kuulu joukkoon \(A\)”merkitään \(a\notin A\).
Osajoukko: (subset) \(A\) on joukon \(B\) osajoukko, merkitään \(A\subset B\),
jos kaikille pisteille on voimassa
\[\mathbf{x}\in A \Rightarrow \mathbf{x}\in B.\]
Sanotaan myös: \(A\) sisältyy (inclusion) joukkoon \(B\).
Huom: Joissakin maissa/kirjoissa merkintä \(A\subset B\) tarkoittaa aitoa osajoukkoa, ts.
tapaus \(A=B\) ei ole sallittu, jolloin erillinen merkintä \(A\subseteq B\) sallii myös joukkojen
yhtäsuuruuden; vrt. \(a< b\) ja \(a \le b\). Myös merkintä \(A\subsetneq B\) tarkoittaa
aitoa osajoukkoa.
Leikkaus: (intersection) Joukkojen leikkaus sisältää ne pisteet,
jotka kuuluvat molempiin joukkoihin:
\[A\cap B = \{ \mathbf{x}\in \mathbf{R}^n\mid \mathbf{x}\in A \text{ ja }\mathbf{x}\in B\}.\]
Lyhennysmerkintä: \(\wedge\) = ’ja’.
Yhdiste eli unioni: (union) Joukkojen yhdiste sisältää ne pisteet,
jotka kuuluvat jompaankumpaan joukkoon tai molempiin:
\[A\cup B = \{ \mathbf{x}\in \mathbf{R}^n\mid \mathbf{x}\in A \text{ tai }\mathbf{x}\in B\}.\]
Matematiikassa ’tai’ (lyhennetään \(\vee\)) tarkoittaa ”jompikumpi tai molemmat”.
Joukkojen erotus: (difference) Merkintä \(A\setminus B\) luetaan ”\(A\) pois \(B\)”.
Se sisältää ne joukon \(A\) pisteet, jotka eivät kuulu joukkoon \(B\):
\[A\setminus B =\{ \mathbf{x}\in A \mid \mathbf{x}\notin B\}.\]
Komplementti: (complement) Joukon \(A\subset\mathbf{R}^n\) komplementti
on joukko, johon kuuluvat kaikki \(A\):n ulkopuoliset pisteet:
\[\mathbf{R}^n \setminus A =\{ \mathbf{x}\in \mathbf{R}^n\mid \mathbf{x}\notin A\}.\]
Muitakin merkintöjä on yleisesti käytössä, mutta tämä riittäköön.
